Terms of service
Version 1.0. Effective [effective date].
The short version
This summary is here to help you read the terms. It isn’t a substitute for them.
- Untangle is a self-help app. It is not therapy, not medical care, and not a crisis service. If you might be in danger, contact your local emergency services or a crisis helpline now (see section 3).
- You must be 16 or older to use it, or 18 or older where the law treats anyone under 18 as a child. If you’re under 18, a parent or guardian must agree to these terms for you.
- What you write in Untangle (your journal, moods, check-ins and plans) stays on your device and belongs to you. We don’t receive it and can’t recover it if your device is lost.
- On iPhone, some of Untangle is free and the rest needs a subscription, which you buy, manage, cancel and get refunds for through the App Store. Subscriptions renew automatically until you cancel. The Android app doesn’t sell subscriptions yet.
- Untangle is provided “as is”, and our liability is limited (sections 13 and 14).

1. Who we are and what these terms cover
These Terms of Service (“terms”) are an agreement between you and the developer who publishes Untangle, named as the seller on its App Store page and as the developer on its Google Play page (“Untangle”, “we”, “us”). They cover the Untangle mobile apps for iPhone and Android, the website at get-untangle.com, and any related services we provide (together, the “service”).
Our privacy policy explains how we handle information, and forms part of these terms.
By downloading, opening or using the service, you agree to these terms. If you don’t agree, don’t use the service.
2. Who can use Untangle
You must be at least 16 years old to use the service.
In some countries you must be at least 18. Where the law where you live treats anyone under 18 as a child for data protection, so that we’d need a parent’s verified consent before handling your information (for example India, Kenya, Nigeria and South Africa), you must be at least 18.
If you’re under 18, or under the age at which you can agree to a contract where you live, a parent or legal guardian must agree to these terms for you. Please read them together, especially section 3.
By using the service, you confirm that you meet these requirements. Untangle isn’t designed for children, and we don’t knowingly provide it to anyone below the minimum age that applies to them.
You also confirm that you’re allowed to use the service under the laws that apply to you, and that the sanctions rules in section 18 don’t stop you from using it.
3. Untangle is not medical care, therapy or a crisis service
Please read this section carefully.
Untangle is a self-help and educational tool. It offers written material, practices, journaling and mood tracking that some people find helpful in difficult moments. It is designed for general wellbeing.
- It is not medical or mental health care. Nothing in the service is medical, psychological, psychiatric or other professional advice, diagnosis or treatment. It doesn’t diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any condition.
- It is not therapy, and it doesn’t create a relationship with a therapist or clinician. No clinician reviews what you do in the app, and no one monitors your entries.
- It is not a medical device. It isn’t intended for use in diagnosing, treating or preventing any disease or condition.
- It is not a crisis or emergency service. We can’t see what you write, so we can’t know if you’re in danger and can’t respond if you are.
If you’re in danger, or thinking about harming yourself or someone else, don’t rely on Untangle. Contact your local emergency services straight away, or reach out to a crisis helpline where you live.
Talk to a qualified professional about your health, and before you change any treatment or medication. Don’t ignore or delay professional advice because of something you read or did in Untangle.
The practices are your choice, at your own pace. Some involve your breath, posture or movement, or bring attention to difficult feelings or memories. If you’re pregnant, have a heart, lung or other medical condition, or have experienced trauma, check with a professional before trying them. Stop any practice that makes you dizzy, short of breath, in pain or more distressed. Don’t do practices, or listen to audio that asks you to close your eyes or relax deeply, while driving, cycling, operating machinery or doing anything else that needs your full attention. You take part in the practices at your own risk, to the extent the law allows.
The written material in Untangle draws on approaches used in self-help and therapy, but using the app isn’t the same as receiving those approaches from a professional. We don’t promise any particular result.
4. Your license to use the app
We give you a personal, limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license to download and use the Untangle app on devices you own or control, for your own non-commercial use, in line with these terms and the rules of the store you got it from (the Apple Media Services Terms and Conditions or the Google Play Terms of Service, the “store terms”).
We own the service, or license it from others. The license is not a sale, and you don’t get any rights in the service except the ones these terms give you.
5. Free features and subscriptions
5.1 What’s free and what’s paid
On iPhone, you can use some of Untangle for free, and other content and features need a paid subscription (“subscription”). The iPhone app shows what’s included before you buy. The Android app doesn’t sell subscriptions yet, and everything in it is currently available without one. We may change which features are free and which are paid.
5.2 Buying through the App Store
Subscriptions are sold through Apple’s App Store (the “store”), not by us directly. The store takes the payment, using the payment method on your store account, and its store terms apply to the purchase alongside these terms. We don’t receive your card or bank details.
5.3 Free trials
We may offer a free trial for new subscribers. The app shows the trial’s length and the price that applies after it before you start. Unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the trial ends, your subscription starts automatically and the store charges you the price shown. Eligibility for a trial is decided by the store (for example, the store may allow one trial per account).
5.4 Automatic renewal
Subscriptions renew automatically at the end of each billing period (for example monthly or yearly) at the then-current price, and the store charges your payment method, unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the current period ends.
5.5 Canceling
You can cancel at any time through the store: open the Settings app on your iPhone, tap your name, then Subscriptions, then Untangle, then Cancel Subscription. You can also get there from Your plan in Untangle’s settings.
Canceling stops future renewals. You keep access until the end of the period you’ve already paid for. Deleting the app does not cancel your subscription.
5.6 Refunds
Because the store processes payments, refunds are handled by the store under its own policies, and we can’t issue them ourselves. To ask for one, use Apple’s Report a Problem page. If you’re in the EU or UK, you may have a legal right to withdraw from a purchase of digital content; the store handles those requests. Nothing in these terms limits any refund right you have under the law.
5.7 Price and plan changes
We may change subscription prices or plans. The store will tell you about a price change for your subscription in advance, as its rules require, and may ask for your consent before a price increase takes effect. If you don’t agree to a new price, you can cancel before it applies.
5.8 Family Sharing and offer codes
- Family Sharing (Apple). The person who buys a subscription on the App Store can share it with up to five family members through Apple’s Family Sharing, under Apple’s rules. Each family member must still meet the age requirements in section 2.
- Offer codes and promotions. We may offer promotional prices, offer codes or free access, for example to people who can’t afford a subscription. Codes are redeemed through the store, can’t be exchanged for cash, and may have their own conditions, which we’ll show you when you redeem them.
5.9 If your payment fails
If the store can’t take a renewal payment, it may retry for a period and you may keep access while it does (a “grace period”), as the store’s rules allow. If the payment still fails, paid features stop until the subscription is renewed. Your own content is not affected; it stays on your device.
5.10 When a subscription ends
When a subscription ends, paid content and features, including paid audio already downloaded to your device, are no longer available until you subscribe again. Free features keep working, and your own content stays on your device and remains yours.
6. Your content
“Your content” means what you create in the app: journal entries, moods, check-ins, plans, bookmarks, and anything else you write or record.
- It’s yours. You own your content. These terms don’t give us any rights to it.
- It stays on your device. The app stores your content on your device. We don’t receive it, store it on our servers, or have access to it. (The privacy policy describes the limited technical information the app does send, which never includes your content.)
- Backups are yours to manage. Your content may be included in your device’s own backup (such as iCloud Backup or Google’s Android backup), depending on your device settings. We can’t recover your content if your device is lost, damaged or reset, or if you delete the app without a backup, and we aren’t responsible for that loss.
- Moving between iPhone and Android isn’t supported; content doesn’t transfer between the two.
- Apple Health (iPhone only). If you turn on mood export, the app writes your mood entries to Apple Health on your device. What happens to them there is governed by Apple’s terms and your Health settings.
7. Our content and intellectual property
The service, including the workbooks, chapters, practices, audio, illustrations, text, design, software, and the Untangle name and logo, is owned by us or our licensors and protected by copyright, trademark and other laws. Except for the license in section 4, we don’t give you any rights in it. You may not copy, share, sell, publish or make derivative works from our content, except as the law allows for personal use.
8. Acceptable use
When you use the service, you agree not to:
- copy, modify, distribute, sell or rent the app or its content, or extract the content in bulk;
- reverse engineer, decompile or try to discover the app’s source code, except where the law allows this despite this restriction;
- get around, disable or interfere with how we control access to paid features or content;
- scrape the service, or use it or its content to build a competing product or to train artificial intelligence or machine-learning models;
- interfere with or disrupt the service, our servers or networks, including by sending automated or excessive requests;
- use the service to break any law or anyone else’s rights; or
- use the service in a way that could harm us, our providers or other people.
9. Feedback
If you send us ideas, suggestions or bug reports, you agree we may use them to improve Untangle without owing you anything. Please don’t send us your journal entries or other personal content; we don’t need them to help you.
10. Changes to the service
Untangle is evolving. We may add, change or remove features and content, and we may stop offering the service. New features may come with their own terms. Some, such as features that use artificial intelligence, may work differently from the rest of the app or need information the current version doesn’t use. If so, we’ll tell you what’s different and show you any additional terms before you use the feature, and you can choose not to.
If we stop offering the service entirely, we’ll try to give reasonable notice. If you have a subscription when that happens, you can ask the store for a refund of the unused period under its policies.
11. Third-party services
The service works with services run by others, including Apple, Google, Apple Health, your email app and your web browser. Their own terms and privacy policies apply to your use of them, and we’re not responsible for them. If we link to other websites, the links are for your convenience; we don’t control those sites.
12. Updates to the app
We may release updates that fix problems, change features or are needed for the service to keep working. Some updates may be required to keep using the app. Please keep your app and device up to date.
13. Disclaimers
Please read this section carefully; it limits our responsibility.
The service is provided “as is” and “as available”. To the fullest extent the law allows, we make no promises or warranties of any kind, express or implied, about the service, including any implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, title and non-infringement. We don’t promise that the service will meet your needs, improve your wellbeing or any condition, be uninterrupted, timely or error-free, or that any content is complete or accurate. Your use of the service is at your own risk.
Some places don’t allow some of these disclaimers, so some of them may not apply to you. Nothing in these terms limits any rights you have as a consumer that can’t be limited by contract.
14. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent the law allows:
- We aren’t liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or for loss of data (including your content), profits, revenue or goodwill, arising from or related to the service or these terms, even if we were told such damages were possible.
- Our total liability for all claims arising from or related to the service or these terms is limited to the greater of (a) the amount you paid for the service in the 12 months before the event giving rise to the claim, and (b) US$100.
Nothing in these terms excludes or limits liability that can’t be excluded or limited by law, including, where applicable, liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud.
If you live in the EU or UK: sections 13 and 14 don’t limit our liability for breaching our legal duty to provide the service with reasonable care and skill, or for any loss you suffer that was foreseeable when you agreed to these terms. We’re not responsible for losses that weren’t foreseeable, or for losses to a business.
15. Resolving disputes
If you have a problem with the service, please contact us at support@get-untangle.com first. Most issues can be sorted out quickly. If we can’t resolve a dispute within 60 days of receiving your written notice (including your name, how to reach you, what the dispute is about and what you want), either of us may take it to court as section 16 describes. Time limits for bringing the claim are paused while we try to resolve it this way. Nothing in this section stops you from bringing a claim in a small claims court, or from contacting a consumer protection authority.
If you live in the EU, you may also use an alternative dispute resolution body in your country.
16. Which laws apply and where disputes are heard
If you use Untangle for yourself, as almost everyone does, these terms are governed by the laws of the place where you live, and you can bring proceedings in the courts there.
If you use the service for a business, these terms are governed by the laws of the place where we’re based, and disputes are heard in the courts there.
17. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms, for example when we add features, when the law changes, or to make them clearer. We’ll post the new version on this page with a new effective date and version number. If a change is significant, we’ll also tell you in the app or by another reasonable means before it takes effect. If you keep using the service after a change takes effect, the new terms apply; if you don’t agree, stop using the service and cancel any subscription. Changes don’t apply retroactively, and we won’t use a change to these terms to start using information in new ways without your consent where the law requires it.
18. Ending these terms
You can stop using the service at any time by deleting the app; remember to cancel any subscription separately (section 5.5).
We may suspend or end your license if you seriously or repeatedly break these terms, if the law requires it, or if we stop offering the service. Sections of these terms that by their nature should continue (including sections 6, 7, 9 and 13 to 21) continue after these terms end.
You may not use the service if you’re located in a country subject to a US government embargo, or if you’re on any US government list of prohibited or restricted parties or an equivalent list that applies to us.
19. Additional terms for the App Store and Google Play
19.1 If you got Untangle from Apple’s App Store
These additional terms apply to the iPhone app, as Apple requires:
- These terms are between you and us, not Apple. We, not Apple, are solely responsible for the app and its content.
- License. Your license to the app is limited to a non-transferable license to use it on Apple-branded devices you own or control, as allowed by the usage rules in the Apple Media Services Terms and Conditions, except that the app may be accessed by other accounts associated with you through Family Sharing or volume purchasing.
- Support. We, not Apple, are responsible for maintenance and support of the app. Apple has no obligation to provide any maintenance or support.
- Warranty. If the app fails to meet any warranty that applies and can’t be disclaimed, you can tell Apple and Apple will refund the purchase price (if any) for the app. To the fullest extent the law allows, Apple has no other warranty obligation for the app, and any other claims, losses or costs from a failure to meet a warranty are our responsibility, to the extent these terms don’t disclaim them.
- Product claims. We, not Apple, are responsible for addressing any claims by you or anyone else relating to the app or your use of it, including product liability claims, claims that the app fails to meet any legal or regulatory requirement, and claims under consumer protection, privacy or similar laws, including in connection with the app’s use of HealthKit.
- Intellectual property. If anyone claims that the app or your use of it infringes their intellectual property rights, we, not Apple, are responsible for investigating, defending, settling and discharging the claim.
- Legal compliance. You confirm that you’re not located in a country subject to a US government embargo or designated by the US government as a “terrorist supporting” country, and that you’re not on any US government list of prohibited or restricted parties.
- Contact. Questions, complaints or claims about the app go to us at support@get-untangle.com.
- Third-party terms. You must comply with any third-party terms that apply when you use the app.
- Third-party beneficiary. Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these terms. Once you accept these terms, Apple has the right (and is deemed to have accepted the right) to enforce them against you as a third-party beneficiary.
If these terms conflict with Apple’s Licensed Application End User License Agreement on any point Apple requires, Apple’s minimum terms apply.
19.2 If you got Untangle from Google Play
Google is not a party to these terms and isn’t responsible for the app. Your use of Google Play is also governed by the Google Play Terms of Service.
20. General
- Entire agreement. These terms and the privacy policy are the whole agreement between you and us about the service.
- If part is invalid. If a court finds part of these terms unenforceable, the rest stays in force.
- No waiver. If we don’t enforce part of these terms straight away, we can still enforce it later.
- Transfer. You can’t transfer your rights under these terms. We may transfer ours, for example if Untangle is sold or reorganized, and if we do, your rights under these terms aren’t reduced.
- Things outside our control. We’re not responsible for delays or failures caused by events beyond our reasonable control.
- Language. These terms are written in English. If we provide a translation and it conflicts with the English version, the English version applies, unless the law says otherwise.
- US government users. The app is “commercial computer software” and is provided to US government users only with the rights these terms give everyone else.
- California users. Under California Civil Code section 1789.3, you can contact the Complaint Assistance Unit of the Division of Consumer Services of the California Department of Consumer Affairs in writing at 1625 North Market Blvd., Suite N 112, Sacramento, CA 95834, or by phone at (800) 952-5210.
